The RVCE Years 1987-1991 Revisited….

Written in 2014 for R V College Golden Jubilee Memoirs

It was my inquisitiveness to explore electronic gadgets in my 11th and 12th standard that had made me devote a lot of time with an elderly friend Satish who was already running a radio and TV repair shop. I had relished purchasing these “Electronic Calling Bell” kits from SP Road, assemble the PCB and install in my locality homes. My ambition was to learn how to repair radio and TV! I was convinced that only Electronics was my cup of tea and I decided to relinquish my medical seat to pursue my interest in Electronics. Well, that is what made me join Electronics branch in RVCE as a B.E. student in the academic year 1987. The only reason for me joining RVCE was that it was very close to my house, Kengeri Satellite Town, which was just 2 km away! You cannot imagine how little I knew on career choices compared to now-a-days kids.

I have, however, never regretted until now for studying in RVCE boys’ school. Yes, ours was the last batch which was boys only batch and we definitely did miss all the girls. It was still a school since during that time it was run like a military institution by our beloved Principal then, Prof. M.R. Holla, who inducted a very strong sense of discipline into the students. It had its benefits though – I had virtually 100% attendance due to the fright of losing a year due to shortage of attendance. Also, I didn’t know what to do if you bunk classes any way since the closest movie theatre or eatery was 15 km away! The lecturers were quite knowledgeable and we were taught the complete syllabus with superb notes for every chapter. The internal evaluation grades did not come for free and you had to earn it. There was no opportunity for any malpractice in Exams. All these ensured that students were required to comprehend the subjects to get good marks. I did end up with flying colours securing first class with distinction in all four years of my course & did just enough in GATE 1991 to get into ME, ECE at Indian Institute of Science. The simple Four Way Test that was written on my ID Card (see box) has got etched into my life and I am proud to say that I have acquired a lot of values not just in my career but also in my life due to RVCE. Thank you RVCE! I am ever indebted for the life skills implanted by you and transforming my curiosity in Electronics hardware into my passion!

Today, the RVCE B.E. Electronics batch of 1991 is quite worthy and successful. Anand, Atiq, Basheer, Guruprasad, Harish, Hemanth, Jayanth, Kishan, Kotresh, Mahesh, Mallesh, Manil, Prabhu, Rajiv, Ranga, Raveesh, Sampath, Sandeep, Sridhar2, Srinivas, Sriranjan, Sumit, Vasudev, Venky, Vinay and many others are in contact with me even now. Though they have reached their own summits in their careers, they display the same warmth towards me that was established during my college days and every one of them venerates their Alma mater.

My RVCE ID Card – My signature was almost how I wrote my name – Single ID card for 4 years
